SLO Gum Wall
sticking around california
Welcome to Bubblegum Alley in St. Luis Obispo, California! This ever changing alley way is a perfect photo op - unless it makes you say ‘ewww’ of course!
How did it STart?
Some historians. believe The Bubblegum wall started back after WWII from a SLO High School Graduation while others think it started in the 1950’s from a college rivalry between SLO High School and Cal Poly. Regardless of how it got it stat, this alley way is now an icon! Twice in its lifetime, the city had tried to clean it up, but the pure persistence of the gum let the city know this is a landmark here to stay!
Where is it located?
It is located at: 733.5 Higuera St. San Luis Obispo, CA 93401.

I forgot my gum! Is some near by?
You are not alone - this was my first thought when we got here! Luckily there was a Rocketfizz (one of my favorite old-timey candy stores!) right around the corner. They have tons of options to choose from. There is also a candy shop, SLO Sweets that has a gum-ball right outside for connivence. These are the best closest options, but of course a few gas stations roam the area within half a mile.
I was in SLO for a swim meet with the University of Hawaii, but this quaint town is defiantly on my go-back list! It is such a beautiful beach town, with all the small-town feels. If you ever do the Pacific Coast Highway Road Trip then you will go right through St. Louis Obispo! Regardless of how you make it, it will be worth your while.
While is maybe a bit unsanitary and untraditional, adding your very own piece of gum here is a very memorable experience. It is fun to see and think of all that experienced this moment too while chewing their own gum. Just think - your chewed up gum is now a piece of California history!
