Sea Glass Beach

a glassy suprise

Sea Glass Beach is located on the South Shore of Kauai about 10 minutes from Salt Pond Beach. It is such a unique beach because the sand is mostly made up of Sea Glass! Sea Glass is made from broken bottles, windshields, flasks or anything glass really. The movement of the ocean smooths it out over time and add this frost like finish to it! It is truly amazing.

This beach is pretty much souly for spectating. It is very rocky and the water does not look the most inviting. I just walked up and down the beach a few times looking at all the glass and shells and maybe picking up one or two for souvenir.

Most of the pieces are very small at this point but their are a few big ones! Plus this beach is always getting new glass washed up.

The best part of this beach was seeing this guy! A Monk Seal! This was the second one I have seen in Hawaii and first one on a beach. He sat there letting the water come up and cool him off and would wiggle around every now and then. It is illegal to touch them or come within a few hundred feet. So please always stay back and respect them!

Driving east on the main highway from Waimea, you will run into Port Allen Airport. It is just down the road from there. There is a parking lot right in front of the beach.

warning

The conditions at Sea Glass Beach are not for swimming. This beach is great for spectating but please refrain from getting into the water as the strong currents can take you away easily. Also, becuase this beach is popular for Monk Seal sightings please be aware at all times. These animals can be agressive if you get close so please stay at lest 100 feet away.
